What is Tonsillitis ?

Tonsillitis is an infection of your tonsils, the two masses of tissue at the back of your throat which form part of immune system. 

•       Symptoms include sore throat, difficulty swallowing and tender lymph nodes.
•      Tonsillitis is usually caused by a viral infection but can be from a bacterial infection.

 

What are Tonsils?

 

• The tonsils are balls of lymph tissue on both sides of the throat, above and behind the tongue. 

• They are collections of lymphoid tissue facing into the aerodigestive tract protecting it. 

• They are part of your immune system, which helps the body fight infection. 

What is the Function of Tonsils?

• Tonsils are your first line of defense against potential infections.

• The tonsils play a role in protecting the body against respiratory and gastrointestinal infections.

•  Your tonsils act as filters, trapping germs that could otherwise enter your airways and cause infection.

• Stay well hydrated to prevent throat from drying
• Rest well

What are the Complications of Tonsillitis?

• Pharyngitis
• Peritonsillar abscess or Quinsy
• Rarely Septicemia
