Dr. Mary Alphonse

Adenoids

Enlarged and inflamed adenoids are one of the commonest causes of illness in children. Several kids have enlarged adenoids or suffer from recurrent adenoiditis.

What are Adenoids?

Adenoids are nothing but a mass of lymphatic tissues located at the back of the throat. They are similar to tonsils, and are located right above them. Unlike tonsils, which can be easily seen when you open your mouth, adenoids not directly visible.

Along with the tonsils, adenoids are the first line of defense against bacteria and viruses.

What is Adenoiditis?

Adenoiditis is an inflammation of the adenoids caused by infection. Adenoids are masses of lymphatic tissue that help the body fight infection. Adenoids are found in the throat, also called the pharynx, just behind the nose. Along with the tonsils, adenoids are the first line of defense against bacteria and viruses.

What is the Role of Adenoids?

Adenoids and tonsils are part of the immune system. They help to prevent and fight infection in your body by capturing bacteria or germs that enter your body.

Adenoids along with the tonsils, are part of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system clears away infection and keeps body fluids in balance. The adenoids and tonsils work by trapping germs coming in through the mouth and nose.

The lymphatic system performs several roles to help protect you from infection of which  Adenoids are part.

Adenoids store white blood cells and antibodies that help to destroy possible infections threatening your health. If the adenoids become inflamed, they may not perform their function properly.

They sometimes become swollen and enlarged or chronically infected. This can be due to infections, allergies, or other reasons.

What are the symptoms of adenoiditis?

Adenoiditis may begin as a swelling or enlargement of the adenoids. The swelling can block or restrict your airways. It can also make it difficult to breathe through your nose.

Other problems associated with swollen adenoids include:

  • Sounding nasally when speaking, as if nose is pinched
  • Persistent runny nose with mucous
  • Sore or dry throat, especially in the morning, from breathing through the mouth
  • Mouth breathing feels more comfortable than breathing through your nose
  • Snoring in your sleep
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Infection symptoms, such as a runny nose that produces green or discolored mucus
  • Bad breath
  • Noisy breathing, "Darth Vader" breathing
  • Dry lips and mouth due to mouth breathing

What causes adenoiditis?

Adenoiditis can be caused by a bacterial infection, such as infection with the bacteria Streptococcus. It can also be caused by a number of viruses, including Epstein-Barr virus, adenovirus, and rhinovirus.

What Are the Signs & Symptoms of Enlarged Adenoids?

All patients have nasal obstruction which may result in oral breathing, recurrent nasal infection and hypo nasal speech. Higher percentage of children with Adenoid Hypertrophy suffer from snoring.
