What are the common Ear Complaints?

  • Earache: Pain in the ear can have many causes such as earwax, middle ear infections or as referred pain from nose or throat infections or from pain elsewhere.
  • Otitis media (middle ear inflammation): Inflammation or infection of the middle ear, part behind the eardrum, caused by an acute or chronic infection.
  • Swimmer’s ear (Otitis externa): Inflammation or infection of the outer ear composing of pinna and ear canal. Acute causes are usually infections; chronic otitis is often due to dermatitis.
  • Meniere’s disease: A condition in which begins with malfunctioning of the inner ear on one and later both. Vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss, and pain are common symptoms.
  • Tinnitus: Ringing in one or both ears which can be due to damage from loud noise exposure, or from aging or ear injury or issues with circulatory system.
  • Cerumen (ear wax) impaction: Ear wax may block the ear canal and adhere to the eardrum. The eardrum’s reduced vibrations impair hearing.
  • Ruptured eardrum: Very loud noises, sudden changes in air pressure, infection, or foreign objects can tear the eardrum. The small hole usually heals within a few weeks.
  • Acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma): A non-cancerous tumor that grows on the nerve leading from the inner ear to the brain. The pressure on the nerve from the tumor may cause hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo and imbalance.
  • Mastoiditis: Infection of the mastoid bone, just behind the ear, can be a from untreated middle ear infections.
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV): A disruption of function in the inner ear, causing brief episodes of vertigo from mild to intense dizziness. It is usually triggered by specific changes in your head's position.
  • Cholesteatoma: This is a benign condition. It is the abnormal buildup of skin within the middle ear and surrounding bones. Often there is a foul smelling discharge associated with hearing loss.
